Are you wondering how to make a photo zine or causal photobook to get your work out into the world?

This four-session zine workshop breaks down the fundamentals for selecting and sequencing images, organizing and developing your layout using Affinity Publisher or Adobe InDesign, learning the proper settings for printing and approaches to distribution.

This workshop is a skill-building course focused on editing and sequencing photographs. Come to The Bakery for an opportunity to explore producing your own small run, low-cost photo publication. Your zine can be made at home or on an office copier (or outsource to a print shop) to distribute to friends, family, and beyond - for fun and (maybe) profit.

This four-session zine workshop breaks down the fundamentals for selecting and sequencing images, organizing and developing your layout using Affinity Publisher or Adobe InDesign, learning the proper settings for printing and approaches to distribution.

Materials for the first day of class:

  • 30-40 printed photos (4”x6” recommended) you are considering for your zine.

  • Affinity Publisher, Adobe InDesign, or an alternate way of making a PDF of your images.

  • A willingness to learn and exchange feedback!

Proof print and software options:

Prints:

  • Print your images at home, or at:Hunt’s Photo,Shutterfly,Adorama, or a local Walgreens or CVS

  • Rent by the hour at the Bakery to use our facilities to print your work prepare your work ($10/hour for workshop participants, $.06/sq” on inkjet, once registered).

Software:

Affinity Publisher is $69.99 for life, and periodically goes on sale. Adobe InDesign is $22.99/month

Workshop fee does not include printing or software access through The Bakery outside of class hours.

Andrew D. McClees is a photographer and bookmaker based in Portland, Maine. He runs the photo-publishing company wastelandbooks, and earned his MFA in Photography at Hartford Art School. Andrew has been a Core Member of The Bakery Photo Collective since 2022.
