Introduction to Black and White Darkroom with Megan Bainbridge
July 18, August 1, August 15, August 29, and September 12, 2025 from 1pm-5pm
4 session workshop
Sliding Scale - $350 - 500
This introductory course for black and white film photography is designed to provide participants with an understanding of 35mm photography and the foundations for darkroom usage. Topics covered include but are not limited to: camera operation (aperture, ISO, shutter speed, light meter interpretation), film processing, darkroom setup, RC printing, dodging and burning techniques, using filters, and print evaluation. The course will dig into darkroom exposure and development techniques to build skills and confidence in processing and printing work.
Through this experience, students will understand the basics of darkroom printing and explore what makes a good print, as well as how to make those determinations independently.
Students can expect to gain confidence in operating a 35mm (or medium format) SLR camera, developing film, making contact sheets, selecting images, and generating high quality prints.
At the end of the course, students will have developed several rolls of film, created a handful of strong prints, and be fully capable of working independently in the darkroom to continue with a personal darkroom printing practice.
Materials, equipment, and Bakery access details:
A $15 materials fee is built into the workshop cost and covers all necessary chemistry. Students may rent Bakery space at 50% of the hourly rental rate for the duration of the workshop.
